Islamic Clerics Decry Violence

As a supporter of the Iraq War, I have to admit my major concern has always been the violence espoused in the Qu'ran regarding infidels and apostates. Yes, Christianity has its bloody past as well, but the major difference to me is that, where the Christian episodes have been a result of men's decisions in implementing their Faith, the New Gospel, and Christ's teachings , never advocate the kind of forced conversions, or punishments that the Qu'ran does. The fact that the sword is imbedded in the most basic teachings of Islam is a troubling fact, which is why this article from the Washington Time's reporting on a joint statement by both Shia and Sunni clerics renouncing violence in Iraq is a positive, optimistic event which hopefully will begin to ease the sectarian distrust and violence. And just to note in passing, the NY Times doesn't seem to be following this story yet, but instead is headlining the increasing importance of the militias for the people of Iraq.  As  I have said before, "Only the News They See Fit to Print".
